Also known as bandhas, Kundalini Yoga locks allow you to develop core strength and balance your energies. The powerful tools can be a central part of your everyday practice.
However, when you are new to applying bandhas, you may find that they are challenging. If you’re just getting started, you will need to practice these Kundalini Yoga locks regularly.
Before you start practicing the Kundalini Yoga locks, you need to assume the right position. Start by finding a comfortable spot.
Sit on your heels and spread your knees to each side. Next, you should put your palms on your thighs and get started.
Step 1: Apply the Root Lock
Once you are comfortable, the first step is to breathe in and then out. When you have relaxed, you can start by trying to apply the Root Lock.
This bandha involves contracting the muscles around your pelvis and grounding yourself to the earth below you.
When you have successfully engaged in the Root Lock, you should breathe in and out once again. You can then relax all of your muscles completely before moving on.
Step 2: Move onto the Diaphragm Lock
Next, you will be practicing the Diaphragm Lock, which helps to improve your digestion and energize your chakras.
Once again, you should breathe in and out completely and then relax your body before you apply this Kundalini Yoga lock.
After you have successfully engaged in this bandha, you will need to breathe in and out another time. You should relax your muscles before you move onto step three.
Step 3: Apply the Neck Lock
While staying in the same position, the next step is to apply the Neck Lock. This involves gently moving your chin down towards your chest while keeping your neck straight at all times. To perfect the Neck Lock, you will also need to roll your shoulders forward.
This bandha is all about precision, and so it may take you some time to get to grips with it. It’s important to keep your neck and back as straight as possible whenever you are applying this lock. If you find it hard at first, keep trying. Then, take a moment to relax.
Step 4: Repeat (and Repeat Again)
Once you have completed steps one to three completely, you should return to the beginning of this cycle.
For three minutes, you should repeat these three exercises one after another. You may find that it takes a high level of stamina to keep going.
You may find that you sweat when you are repeating these bandhas. Don’t panic—that is completely normal. When you are applying each of the Kundalini Yoga locks, pay attention to how the energy moves through your nerve channels and your spine.
