Kriya Sequence to Balance the First Chakra
/ Kriya
It is essential that the first chakra is balanced. Much like a tree, the first chakra roots us to the ground and our energy. So that we might grow firmly and safely, we must ensure that this chakra is always in balance. The source of energy for your other chakras, this one plays an important role in ensuring that everything works in sync.
When you are out of balance, you will feel it in all aspects of your life. You may feel ill at ease or uncomfortable for no reason. Perhaps one of the most common symptoms that your first chakra is imbalanced is that you feel insecure or anxious about the future. If that’s the case, you must practice a kriya to balance the first chakra. Fortunately, there is a 5000 year old practice in Kundalini Yoga on which you may always rely.

How to do This Kriya
Do you have a few minutes to spare to balance your first chakra? The following Kundalini Yoga kriya can be attempted by complete beginners. Use these steps to guide you:
Posture
Sit in Easy Pose or any position that suits you. Keep your spine as straight as possible. Keep your chin in and your chest outward. Focus your eyes on the tip of your nose.
Mantra
While you are in this position, you should chant the words ‘Humee Hum Brahm Hum’. This mantra translates directly as ‘We are we, We are God’. You can also use Nirinjan Kaur’s Humee Hum track to accompany your mantra. It is found in Musical Affirmations Vol 2.
Technique
Make sure that you chant with your tongue withdrawn. It should touch the upper-middle palate of your mouth as you chant the crucial words of the mantra.
Arms and hands
During this Kundalini Yoga kriya, your elbows should be bent and raised. Next, your hands should be pointed upwards and drawn apart slightly wider than your chest. They should be at a 45-degree angle toward the earth. Keep all of your fingers pointed upwards and straight. You should squeeze them together so they are close to one another.
Movement
As you chant the mantra, you need to move your hands together. During the ‘Humee Hum’, your hands should move in two downward strokes toward each other and the solar plexus.
Next, during the ‘Brahm Hum’ part of the chant, bring your hands down a few more inches. Ensuring that they never touch. At the end of each chant, bring your hands back up to the starting position and repeat the process once again.
On each pulse of the mantra, the anus should be squeezed together in the root lock. This is the first chakra and you should engage it throughout the Kundalini Yoga kriya.
Timing
Beginners should practice this Kundalini Yoga kriya for just three minutes at a time. However, as you progress in your journey, you can move upward. At that point, you will be able to engage in this kriya for longer, between 11 and 15 minutes.
