/ Kriya
As humans, we are constantly treading the line between heavenly and physical reality. We live here on Earth, but many of our experiences within Kundalini Yoga draw on the connection that we have fostered with the universe.
In this guide we will explore a kriya that helps us to strengthen this bridge, enabling us to draw on the power of the cosmos more readily.
Benefits of this Kriya
- Brings the power of the infinite into the body
- Helps to balance and unblock chakras
- Encourages the wisdom of the universe within us
- Brings serenity and calm
How to do this Kriya
Your environment is an essential part of your Kundalini practice. Invest in a good quality yoga mat, and take some time to create the space that makes you comfortable, before getting started on this kriya. When you feel ready to explore a higher reality, it’s time to begin.
Step 1: Bow Pose
Posture: Start by sitting in Easy Pose, or any other seated position that feels comfortable, and lace the fingers together behind the back.
Movement: Bow forward, bringing the forehead to the floor in front of the legs, raising the hands up as high as possible behind the back in Yoga Mudra, keeping the arms totally straight.
Breathing: Begin Breath of Fire, keeping up the pace for a full minute.
After a minute, allow your brain to feel the power of the universe flowing in. Feel its infinite energy, and allow it to flow throughout the veins like heat, spreading to the tips of the fingers and the end of the toes. Continue the Breath of the Fire for a further two and a half minutes.
Step 2: Arm Flap
Posture: Come back to a seated pose and bring the arms out straight to the sides, parallel to the ground.
Movement: Move the arms up and down like a bird, as fast as possible.
Breathing: Start Breath of Fire, and keep it going powerfully, without wavering, for three minutes. During this time, imagine that you are an eagle soaring above the Earth, looking down at the universe below your wings.
Feel the power of the breath enhancing the mental image. Don’t just imagine that you are soaring, actually believe it.
Step 3: Gong Meditation
Posture: Lie down flat on your back and relax deeply.
Meditation: Focus the mind on the sounds of the gong. Keep the mind on the gong and the breath for seven minutes. Allow it to transport you to the infinite, and feel it flowing through you.
To Finish: Inhale deeply and bring the mind back to the present. Begin by moving the hands and feet, before slowly stretching the whole body.
Step 4: Frog Squats
Position: Start this exercise in the squatting position on the feet with knees bent and weight distributed evenly between the feet.
Movement: As you inhale, straighten the legs but keep the hands on the floor in front. As you exhale, return to the squat position.
Chant: As you exhale and return to the squat, powerfully chant “Har”. Continue repeating this movement for one minute.
The Takeaway
Certain exercise sets have the ability to take us to a new dimension, completely bridging the gap between the heavenly and physical reality. Give this kriya a go and see what we mean.
