How To Do Shabad Kriya
If you’re hoping to reap the benefits of the Shabad Kriya, you should practice it each night before you retire to bed. However, if you need to relax during the day or find yourself under worldly stresses, you may find that the kriya can be used then too. The kriya can be used for between 15 and 62 minutes, although beginners should start with short periods.
- Sit with your spine straightened and your legs crossed, or in any position that suits you. . Gently put your hands palm-up in the center of your lap with your right hand over the left. Point your thumbs forward.
- Close your eyes 9/10ths of the way and relax. You need to focus your eyesight on the tip of your nose for the entirety of the Shabad Kriya.
- Repeat the mantra ‘Sa-Ta-Na-Ma’ in your mind while inhaling on each syllable. For example, inhale as you say ‘Sa’ for one, then inhale on ‘Ta’, inhale on ‘Na’, and inhale on ‘Ma’. Do all of this without exhaling. Repeat this for a total of 16 beats.
- Exhale for two strokes and repeat the mental mantra ‘Wahe Guru.’ Continue for 16 to 52 minutes.
Note: This Kriya can be hard for beginners as they may feel that they are running out of breath. Keep things calm, slow, and concentrated.
